Are You a Trim Healthy Mama?

I wouldn’t be a friend if I didn’t make sure you had heard about Trim Healthy Mama (THM). I would call it an eating lifestyle. Serene Allison and Pearl Barrett are sisters whose passion is nutrition and healthy living. Through their own research they developed their eating plan which incorporates some principles you might already be familiar with from low-carb plans, but adds a lot of new information.

Separating Fuels

They separate foods into fuel-types and recommend meals that are either low-carb/high-fat (satisfying -S), moderate carb/low fat (energizing – E), or low in both fats and carbs (fuel pull – FP). What I like about THM is that no food groups are off limits. In an E setting you can have foods such as popcorn, brown rice, or sourdough bread. In an S setting you can have real butter, avocado, full-fat cheese, sour cream and cottage cheese, and chocolate. Did I say chocolate?! I’ll be honest that their plan is fairly complicated and I can’t summarize in a reasonably-lengthed blog post what they took a book to explain. I just wanted to give you a very basic description and direct you to their website, books, and Facebook group for more information.

Facebook Groups

The Trim Healthy Mama Facebook Group has over 100,000 members. I’ve been following it for over a year to maintain a healthy weight and eating habits. They only admit women to the group, but there is also an Unofficial Trim Healthy Men group.

Seeing is Believing

I really enjoy the testimonials and before/after pictures. There are a lot of women (and their husbands and children) that have lost a significant amount of weight. Many ladies report being able to discontinue or reduce medicine for health problems such as diabetes and high blood pressure. There have been several who had been infertile, but after following THM became pregnant. The difference in skin tone is amazing. Some of these ladies’ pictures could be beside the word “glow” in the dictionary. There has been such a wide variety of health complaints that have been improved that I’ve started to wonder if sugar/carbohydrates aren’t the cause for many of our common health problems. After amazing lab results, some “Mamas” have been able to share the plan with their doctors who have then ordered the book for theirselves, so that’s saying something.

  1. I gave up years ago, trying to follow any diet plan! What works for me….when I stick with it…is to just eat good meals, cut out the junk, especially in the evening, and drink lots of water. For the past year or so, I’ve usually had a smoothie or juice (using my juicer) for breakfast.

    1. Although I understand what you’re saying, I really don’t think of THM as a diet so much because its principles are good for overall health for everyone.

    1. For sure! That big Facebook group would be a great place to join and read posts to get a broader feel for it, too. It’s a great group of ladies.
